Istanbul on the Scene

Take some of the biggest fashion designers, major models and add a floating catwalk on the Bosphorus and you have the makings for Istanbul as a fashion destination. While it has a bevy of local talent, an amazing luxury market and one of the oldest textile traditions, last week the stage was set to cultivate the genesis of a new vogue venue. Wallpaper has the story.

Time To Grow Up

There comes a time in the life of a man when he needs to step up his game and procure a more formal watch. It's great to have a Nixon (some of their designs are terrific), a Tsovet or a Toy. But a formal watch can turn you from a man into a gentleman. I am NOT into the ostentatious, chunky watch look. Some can pull it off, but it's rare. Low profile is so much sexier.
The Cartier Tank Américaine is such a chic watch. Though Cartier does not have the horlogical history as some of the watches I gravitate to, it fits me so well. And fit is essential in choosing any item. The simple lines and shape are quite sensual in a masculine manner.

Patek Philippe creates masterful timepieces and has been doing so since 1839. The Calatrava is a classic design that conveys the values which are synonymous with the company. The subtle white face covers the complicated movement within. This Golden Ellipse is gorgeous in platinum.

Since 1775, Breguet has been making their signature pieces. The Classique and Classique Complication are gorgeous pieces in understated luxury.

Lux Leather Goods

Marc Marmel creates fantastic handmade luggage and leather accessories. The shapes are simple and inspired by vintage Hermès and Louis Vuitton. At first glance, the distressed/cracked leather gives a stunning aged look to the pieces. Upon further inspection, the interior reveals a gorgeous silk lining in vibrant colors. The combination is nothing short of luxury pieces that are must-have.

The Fashion Film

Fashion shows are no longer just models walking down the runway. Now, the innovative designers are heightening the experience with multi sensory spectacles. The one medium that has proved to enhance and capture the energy of the collection is the fashion film. Shown during the show or in conjunction, these films help to act as a narrative - in effect the essence of the designer's vision. Here is a collection of ten of the latest that people are still talking about.

Microphotography

I have long had an immense fascination with microphotography - photographs taken through a light microscope. The shapes, the subject matter and the coloration for contrast are so beautiful and mysterious. Below is a picture of neurons extending from a stem cell. Here are the winning photos for the 2009 Nikon "Small World" contest.

Gucci on Your iPhone

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, but Gucci has created a free App for the iPhone and iTouch - available at the App store. This App gives you access to exclusive and limited edition merchandise, upcoming collaborations and current collections. There is also the music section which is comprised of a playlist by Frida Giannini (Gucci Creative Director), streaming music on the Gucci Channel and Gucci Beats created by Mark Ronson. He is the latest collaborator with Gucci - not only for the music section on this App but also in conjunction with the Icon-Temporary flash stores. These flash sneaker stores will reveal a new sneaker deigned by Ronson at each of the pop-up locations. 18 sneakers in total will be offered - 16 mens styles and 2 for women. Here is some more information about the flash store and photos of the sneakers.

My friend turned me on to this great gift that has wonderful history. He shares my passion for researching the details of an item and now I finally know why a piggy bank is called a piggy bank.

Ale Feather Bracelete Pochette

There is nothing new in the idea that a woman's handbag has become just as much a piece of jewelry as something to carry her lipstick. This gorgeous bag by Raven Kauffman is a stellar example. An 18kt gold bracelet acts as the handle for this calf pochette layered with hummingbird green emu and coque feahers. Added texture is achived with the laser etched feathers which help to give an extra dimesion.

Artcurial - Vintage Hermès Auction

I happened upon an amazing find - the Parisian auction house, Artcurial, will hold their semi-annual Hermès auction this November 10th. If you're not going to be in Paris, bidding is available online. It's a fantastic selection of vintage items which showcases the timeless luxury of the design legend. Birkins, Kellys and scarves are all present - they also have many other pieces that I would love to get my hands on.

Limited Edition and Bespoke Rolex

Project X Designs is a London-based Rolex customizing company that has already found a high-profile clientele anxiously waiting for specific Limited Edition watchs designed in small runs. PXD also has a Bespoke Editions service which allows the client to purchase from an array of Rolex watches and customize it to make it as individual as the owner.
